One thing that we all hate to see is the work not saved. The reason why every online app keeps on saving the draft without even asking. That is a good option since anytime the hardware can crash and all your work is gone. Even if you are using MS Word on PC, you tend to keep pressing the CTLR+S combo to keep the work saved. However, in WordPress, the drafts are updated frequently, thus you don’t have to worry about losing your work. But do you know, that you can duplicate the page to work on one without affecting the existing version. In this article, we’ll show you how you can quickly duplicate a Post or a page in WordPress.
Why Bother Duplicating at all?
If this question is spinning in your mind, allow us to answer it! When you run a blog for a long time, there comes a time that you have to copy and paste something from older posts. Obviously, with some formulas or reports that are available already, there is no need to write them again. Furthermore, there is some content that you can reuse as many times as you want.
The typical way is to copy and paste the content to the new blog. However, that’ll copy what is in the body of the post. The featured image, tags, and settings will be lost. So, duplicating the entire page is the best and the fastest way to get the work done. With what we are about to tell you, you can edit the post right away and start working on it ASAP.
How to Duplicate a Post or Page in WordPress
You’ll start doing this by installing a plugin called Duplicate Post. Just click on the link and then click download, then install it manually on your WordPress. Or search the WordPress plugin directory and you’ll find it there. Once you activate it, you’ll see that there are 2 new options on the Post > All Post Page.
If you click the “Clone” option, it will only clone the page but won’t open it in a new window. However, if you click the “New Draft” button, then the post will be cloned and opened in the new window. As soon as it is open, you can start working right away without any break. That same option applies on the pages as well, no need to install any extra plugin for that.

For website designs or copying landing pages, this plugin works the best. Obviously, you don’t have to do much work, just one click and you are good to edit as much as you want. The hectic step of copy-pasting and then editing is gone now.
Customize Duplicate Post for Better Response:
Now, this is where you’ll love this plugin the most. You can customize this plugin for custom post types and also restrict it to specific users only. Also, you can choose what to copy while duplicating a post. Let’s look at the settings page to see further into it.
Navigate to Settings > Duplicate Post to start customizing it. The settings are divided into 3 segments:
- What to Copy.
- Permissions.
- Display.
Those titles might be enough for you to understand what is going on! But still, let’s explain a little. The default options work the best for most of the sites, but if you still want to customize, simply untick what you don’t want to copy. Now, this won’t be applied to the content, but to the body of the entire post.
The permission option allows you to let the users create duplicate posts. By default, the admin and the editor can do that, but you can tick those whom you trust and they can then duplicate too. Choose pages from the bottom option to let them duplicate pages as well.
The display settings allow you to choose where you want to show the duplicate posts. By default, the settings allow you to show your duplicate work to the post list, edit screen, and admin bar. Once you are done with your changes, don’t forget to click the Save button to complete the task.
